ALZHEIMER’S DISEASE

DESCRIPTION:
Alzheimer’s disease is a brain disorder that slowly destroys memory and thinking skills, and eventually, the ability to carry out the simplest tasks. In most people with Alzheimer’s, symptoms first appear later in life. It is the loss of cognitive functioning — thinking, remembering, and reasoning — and behavioural abilities to such an extent that it interferes with a person’s daily life and activities. It ranges in severity from the mildest stage, when it is just beginning to affect a person’s functioning, to the most severe stage, when the person must depend completely on others for help with basic activities of daily living. Additionally, people with Alzheimer’s also may experience sleeplessness, depression, anxiety, agitation, and other behavioural and psychological symptoms.

AVAILABLE OPTIONS:  Treatment for Alzheimer’s is hardly available in modern medicine, except medicines for the management of behavior.  Early identification of Alzheimer’s would be an advantage in prolonging the quality of life to an extent

LIMITATIONS: There’s no cure for Alzheimer’s disease, but certain medications can temporarily slow down the worsening of dementia symptoms. Medications and other interventions can also help with behavioral symptoms.
